Your workflow runs on a model you can't pin

We pin every library but not the model we work with all day. This year a quiet degradation, an upgrade and an acquisition showed what that costs.

Write-only codebases: we keep adding code and nobody cleans up

Refactoring of year-old code is down 74%, duplication up 81%. A fresh copy from an agent is faster than reading the old one, and we pay for it later in bug fixing.

Coding agents reward judgment, which is why seniors use them most

Vibe coding is sold as a beginner's shortcut, but staff+ engineers use agents most. The hard part is knowing when not to hand the work over.

The agent did exactly what the token allowed

PocketOS lost its production database in 9 seconds and AWS reportedly had a 13-hour disruption. Don't waste time on who to blame, ask what each credential could reach.

Junior engineers aren't going away. The bottom rung is moving

Developer postings are down and more ask for five years' experience, yet IBM is tripling entry-level hiring. What matters is how juniors use AI, not whether they do.

The AI study that broke because developers wouldn't work without it

METR couldn't get a clean productivity number because developers held back tasks they wouldn't do without AI. That refusal is the finding. Stop timing tasks, measure what survives.

Coding agents are good at chores. Give them chores

Two studies of about 33,000 agent PRs agree: docs, CI and build changes merge, bug fixes and performance work stall. Route work by type and stop giving agents your hardest problems.
